“I don’t want sympathy; I want normalcy.”
A wise man once said, “It’s funny how you can have it all yet have nothing.” This resonates deeply as I reflect on my life, the signs it sends me, and the messages I may catch or miss throughout the day. Yesterday, I forced myself to take a break and be “still,” to be more present than I usually am. I called a friend and asked if they would accompany me on an adventure—taking public transportation and getting lost in the city. They agreed, and off we went.
I felt more excited than a five-year-old eating ice cream as we boarded the bus. When I asked the fare, the driver replied, “Two dollars.” I smiled, digging in my pocket to retrieve the funds. The driver then said, “For four dollars, you can ride all day.” I exclaimed, “What! Give me two!” As the tickets printed out, I joked about the driver giving me my “change” on another ticket, and we proceeded to our seats.
Everyone’s therapy is different, and as we grow, we must try new things. I hadn’t ridden public transportation in over fifteen years and wanted to see what it was like to be still and grounded again. Throughout this ride, I gained so much inspiration while feeling a sense of nostalgia. There were several moments where I was in awe. When the bus reached its final stop, a few closed restaurants and a movie theater caught my eye. We decided to watch a movie—one I wouldn’t usually choose—and it spoke to me so deeply that it inspired me to write this blog.
Despite life’s challenges, finding a space to express myself is essential. My blog is one of the many ways I do that.
