People May Support You Less When They Know You’re Going to “Make It”

You might have noticed it already. As you continue to grow on your journey, hitting milestones big or small, sometimes the support around you feels like it’s fading. Friends, family, even colleagues may start to feel distant. You may wonder if it’s just in your head, but these feelings are real. You are not crazy for noticing them.

The truth is, your hard work, determination, consistency, and drive are exactly what draw people closer to you. Like my twin brother once said, “People can see your light.” Just like you notice the light in others or feel inspired by them, others see yours too.

The difference is how they respond. Some turn admiration into envy, confidence into competition, and growth into distance. And the part that hurts is that it can affect you, even when you know it shouldn’t. Why? Why would someone support you in the beginning and then step back as you rise?

I’ve experienced this firsthand. When I was around 20 years old, things really started to kick off in my career. I was chasing every opportunity, showing up early, grinding late, and pouring myself into what I loved. And I noticed it quickly…nearly all of my “friends” started acting differently. Invitations stopped, calls weren’t returned, and casual hangouts faded. It was like a switch flipped the moment they realized I was serious about my path.

That pattern didn’t stop there. Even to this day, I notice similar behaviors from people as I continue to grow. It’s a cycle. And over the years, I’ve learned to use it as a strength. Each time someone distances themselves, it’s a reminder that I’m moving forward. I’ve learned not to take it personally but to see it as a natural part of growth and an opportunity to surround myself with the people who genuinely support my light.

Here’s the truth. People may support you less when they know you’re going to make it because they didn’t think you’d show up through the good, the bad, and the messy. Your drive is energetic and magnetic, and that can make some people feel intimidated. And that’s okay.

You don’t need people around you who feel threatened by your light. Those people, consciously or not, can drain your energy and block your vision. Not physically, but spiritually, if we want to call it that. And even if you’re not the “spiritual” type, you know what I mean.

So take a deep breath and remember this: people may support you less when they know you’re going to make it. It sucks, yeah, but it’s also part of the journey. And as I always say, there are allegedly over eight billion people on this earth. The right ones will stay and celebrate your light, and the rest will fade.

I’ve learned to use this cycle as fuel. It reminds me that growth is real, progress is happening, and my energy is worth protecting. It’s a lesson I carry with me every day, and it’s part of why I keep moving forward, no matter what.
