This might be the freest game I ever give out… and honestly, I should be charging for this one. Matter of fact, I am cutting back on the freebies because you still haven’t booked a Creative Direction Session with me. But I bet you’ve treated yourself to something of equal or greater value lately… probably from a company that wouldn’t even let you speak to a real person if you tried. But… I’ll save that rant for another blog.
Now, back to the question.
If you owned a TV network, how would you run it?
This question doesn’t allow for excuses. It’s a direct one, it deserves a direct answer. And if you’ve never thought about it before, don’t worry. That’s exactly why I’m here, to make you think about the things most people scroll past.
When I say TV network, I’m not talking about cable or satellite. I’m talking about social media, or whatever platform humans are currently pretending they have a choice to participate in. (We really don’t, but that’s a conversation for another day. I keep drifting… stay with me, haha.)
Here’s the sauce… what I like to call the “secret recipe” for both your social media strategy and your mental balance. Actually, scratch that… I don’t even say “balance” anymore. I say discipline. Because “balance” sounds like a spa day, but “discipline” sounds like results.
If you operate your social media as if it were your own TV network, complete with shows, commercials, reruns, and series, then you’re already playing the game smarter than most. Each post is an episode. Each story, a commercial break. Each project, a new show dropping on your network. Doesn’t matter if you’re shooting it on an iPhone or a RED camera… it’s your channel. Your vision.
Think about how many TV channels exist. Hundreds. And within those channels? Thousands of shows, ads, and movies. That’s your blueprint. You just need to build your schedule, your rhythm, your identity, and broadcast you.
Now, I’ll admit, this might sound a little abstract to some. It’s the kind of thing that hits harder in person… which is why you should probably book that session I mentioned earlier. But since we’re already here, I’ll keep going. And if something doesn’t click right away, don’t email me. Re-read this until you reach the frequency. I’m done babysitting folks who listen only to respond instead of to understand.
If I could sum it all up, I’d say this:
Whatever it is you’re doing, or want to do, do it as if you already had it all.
Because if you did have it all, you’d still have to take those same steps anyway.
Let’s use an example. Let’s say I’m a rapper. I’m just starting out… no label, no manager, no big budget. I’ve got talent, but I’m missing all the things people say you need to “make it.”
Now I have two choices:
Option A: Get discouraged. Stop writing. Stop recording. Stop chasing something I’ve probably been doing since I could rhyme words together.
Or Option B: Keep going. Write. Record. Use what I’ve got. Learn how to mix. Invest in myself. Build strategy. Test. Pivot. Rebuild. Repeat.
Because life isn’t about “making it.”
It’s about living it.
And living it doesn’t mean having a mansion with echoing hallways or fake friends who only come around when you’re up. It means doing what lights your fire even when nobody’s watching.
So yeah, when I say run your social media like a TV network, that’s really what I mean… take control of your narrative. Be intentional about what you air, how you schedule it, and what message your audience gets when they tune in.
Because if you owned the network, you’d make sure every show had purpose, right?
So treat your platform the same way.
Hope this helps.
Or at least makes you think.
