I’m an Artist… I Can Do What I Want

If you’re an artist, repeat after me “I’m an artist, I can do what I want.”

Let that sit for a second. Really feel that. Because somewhere along the way, a lot of us forget that part. We get caught up in trying to please people, to fit into what makes sense to others, or worse…what sells. But the truth is, we are artists because we see the world differently, because we feel something that needed to be expressed.

If you’ve been keeping up with me, you already know what I stand for. I’m an artist. And lately, I’ve been leaning into that identity even more. I’ve been intentional about who I am and who I keep around me. If I believe in you, you know it. I move with love, and if I’ve got your back, I really mean that.

This is your reminder to take back what’s yours…if you haven’t already. Take back your why. The reason you started. The reason you fell in love with whatever it is you do. Because somewhere between survival and success, that love can fade a little. I’ll be real with you, I lost mine for a while.

I’ve been doing this for so long that it started to feel like work. I’d only pick up my camera if it was for a client. I’d only design something if it was tied to a check. I stopped creating just to create. I stopped playing. I stopped exploring. And it’s funny, because we’re taught that “getting money” equals success. We’re told to turn our gifts into careers, our passions into profit.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with getting paid for your art. But if that’s all you chase, you’ll forget what made you pick up the brush, the pen, the camera, or the mic in the first place.

I fell into that world for a while. But I’m proud to say I found my way out. Maybe it took me a few years…depending on how you count…but I’m here now. I’m back in love with the freedom that curiosity brings. I’m reminded of the superpowers I was blessed with and how they make me feel when I’m creating, just because I want to.

There’s a joy in doing something without expecting anything back. A peace in creating for the sake of it. That’s the space I’m in right now. And if you’ve been following my journey, you know I like to keep it transparent. I share my experiences not because I have it all figured out, but because I believe we learn from each other. My story is just one example of what it looks like to fall, pause, and return to what’s real.

So yeah, I’m an artist… I can do what I want. And you can too.

You don’t have to take my word for it. You can continue to watch me do it. You can watch me create just because it feels right, because it’s mine, because that’s what artists do. We turn thoughts into visuals, emotions into sound, and pain into purpose.

I hope this helps. I hope it inspires you to pick up where you left off, to play again, to rediscover your curiosity. Because life is going to keep happening, but so should your art.
