I often find myself thinking about thoughts—how they literally control everything, both internally and externally. Amidst these reflections, I get reminded of the importance of telling people who we are and showing them, especially if you’re a creator in any medium wanting to be known for something, whether for pocket change or a full-time living.
The Challenge of Self-Expression
Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that it can be quite challenging to believe in yourself and act on that belief, especially since many creators are introverts who often dwell in their heads. However, learning to express who you are isn’t impossible—it just takes time.
Why It’s Important
But Brandon, why is it important to tell and show people who you are? Shouldn’t they observe and make their own determinations? Sure, they could. But here’s the thing: we know ourselves best, and by telling people who we are, we are essentially teaching them how to treat us. Whether you’re an everyday individual with no creative inclination or a person with countless creative talents, conveying who you are is crucial. It instills respect, understanding, and boundaries. It also acts as a form of continuous self-discovery because as you tell people who you are, you simultaneously question yourself, your current purpose, and how you see your life moving forward.
The Power of Showing
Then comes the part where you “act” by showing people who you are. This too teaches people how to treat you. By displaying the type of person you want people to perceive you as, you reinforce your identity and values. It’s not as simple as 1, 2, 3. It takes time and is, in my view, a lifelong journey. Each day, moment, and chapter will be different, as they should be, given the complexities of life and the various needs, wants, and challenges we face.
Daily Practices for Self-Expression
As a multi-hyphenated creative, here are some daily practices I use to tell and show people who I am, which have helped me over the years and continue to do so:
- Reflect on Your Identity: Spend time each day contemplating who you are and what you stand for.
- Communicate Clearly: Practice articulating your thoughts and feelings to others.
- Set Boundaries: Establish and maintain boundaries that reflect your values and needs.
- Pursue Your Passions: Engage in activities that align with your interests and talents.
- Showcase Your Work: Regularly share your creative outputs with your audience.
- Seek Feedback: Invite constructive criticism to grow and refine your self-presentation.
- Stay Authentic: Remain true to yourself in all interactions and endeavors.
- Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements and growth no matter how small.
Remember, the journey of self-expression is ongoing. Embrace it with patience and persistence, and you’ll find it immensely rewarding.
Hope this helps,
